EDZCOM and DNA enter a partnership to build smart private networks for Finnish enterprises

This media release/news item was published prior to our acquisition of the Cellnex Private Networks business including Edzcom in February 2024. Learn more about the acquisition here.

  • The partnership will deliver ultra-reliable, predictable, low latency and high mobility 4G and 5G smart private networks for asset intensive enterprises
  • The partnership will leverage the expertise and infrastructure of two leading Finnish companies to create industrial grade private networks built on licensed spectrum

EDZCOM, a company of Cellnex, and a European market leader in dedicated private network solutions, and DNA, a company of Telenor, and one of the leading telecommunications companies in Finland, have entered into a partnership to begin building smart private networks for enterprises in Finland and beyond. The partnership was initiated to build a best-in-class, innovative, flexible and long-term private 4G/5G network collaboration to enable leading enterprises to deliver mission-critical business and operational applications.

When seeking to support enhanced digitalisation and autonomous operations in ports, factories, airports, energy and refinery industries, hospitals, logistics, mining and other sectors, many elements needed for a company’s critical operations can be optimised through the implementation of new services.

In a smart private network:

  • Ultra-high reliability prevents expensive, and potentially even dangerous downtime incidents. Mission-critical applications require ultra-robust communications without downtime.
  • Predictable performance delivers consistent high-bandwidth data rates and very low latency: common application demands for connected workers, sensors, vehicles, hardware and machinery.
  • High mobility enables advanced applications to run on mobile assets with both secure and rapid handovers.
  • Ultra-low latency enhances the ability to support highly demanding command-and-control applications.

EDZCOM’s and DNA’s industrial-grade private network solutions will deploy on-premises broadband connectivity to help medium to large-sized enterprises increase their next-gen automation, enhance efficiency and productivity, and further ensure safety and security.

EDZCOM is the leader in Finland for dedicated private networks. Connectivity is one of the key drivers of digitalisation, and this collaboration will enable EDZCOM and DNA to build very high-performance wireless private networks. We have more than five years’ experience of building private networks and we know about customer use cases and how to design, build and operate the networks. DNA is a leading company in the telecommunications business, and they have existing customers in many kinds of industries, so when their customers require private networks, EDZCOM and DNA and will be able to provide a ‘one-stop shop’ and help enterprises in Finland enable new capabilities throughout their operations. In Finland, DNA owns many frequencies, and we will need these 5G frequencies in the future. This is why this is a valuable collaboration, as DNA has the required licensed spectrum, but concentrates its in-house offering on macro network-based private networks, whereas EDZCOM has specialised in dedicated private networks that complement the DNA offering. With these new 4G and 5G capabilities, we will be able to do more specific and tailored solutions for end customers in Finland depending on both their present and future needs. We see that private networks are a growing business area globally, and in newer areas like healthcare, smart cities, public administrations and municipalities too, and these are also fields where our collaboration with DNA will be of future benefit to these specific sectors. At EDZCOM, we want to grow together with DNA, and we see this partnership as a long-term venture. We are also already looking to expand our collaboration throughout Scandinavia and other selected European countries where both our parent companies (Cellnex and Telenor) have operations.

At DNA, our main goal with working with EDZCOM is to join the knowledge and technological capabilities together to become the strongest player in the market in Finland. In mobile networks you need to have licenses for frequencies and that is the asset we have at DNA. EDZCOM has references and working cooperation with private network vendors and have their own industry-leading expertise to deliver the end-to-end solutions. They are, in essence, expanding our technical department to include private networks. Manufacturing, mining and logistics companies need extra-reliable connectivity for their local operations. In setting up the partnership, we agreed on a model whereby Edzcom will broaden our Private Network and Edge Computing offerings with dedicated private networks where we deliver custom built connectivity according to specific customer needs. In terms of the benefits of this collaboration, we see that EDZCOM have good technological solutions, so our ability to go to market will be quicker when we work together. They also understand the business of enterprises so they will help us create sales as well as delivering technical support. As a result, the ability to win new business from enterprises in Finland is higher together than each of us acting alone.
